This April marks the 18th Annual Autism Awareness Month. The Hasbrouck Heights Police Department is proud to announce, on April 2nd, Autism Awareness Day, the launch of a voluntary Special Needs Information Database. This database is designed to serve our residents better when responding to calls involving individuals with special needs.
HHPD Officers are trained to understand that certain situations can be distressing for individuals with special needs. By identifying members of our community who require a unique response and having relevant information readily available in our computer-aided dispatch system (C.A.D.), our officers can respond appropriately, keeping the individual's needs in mind.
Residents with special needs or a family member with special needs are encouraged to complete the Special Needs Information Form. This form is available online at https://hhpd.com and at HHPD Headquarters.
The purpose of this form is to gather emergency contact information, including home addresses and telephone numbers, as well as specific details about individuals with special needs (such as whether they are non-verbal, have sensory issues, or have medical requirements, along with their likes and dislikes). Additionally, if possible, a photograph of the individual will be included in their file to help our Officers identify them easily.
The form will be kept on file with the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, and the information you provide will be treated confidentially. Please be aware that submitting this form is entirely voluntary. You are not required to disclose any medical information if you choose to provide the requested information.
Residents have the option to return the completed form and photograph to our agency at 248 Hamilton Avenue, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ 07604, Attn: Records Bureau. Alternatively, you can email the form along with the photograph to records@hhpd.com. Please be sure to include your email address on the form so we can reach you for any updates and additional information.
The HHPD has launched an online store for Autism Awareness apparel, featuring outerwear for sale. Proceeds will support the ongoing training of our HHPD officers. To shop, visit https://tinyurl.com/hc6cq6c and click "GO" next to HHPD. Please note that the deadline to place your order is April 11th, 2025.
These initiatives join the HHPD's Blue Envelope Program, which aims to facilitate clear communication between law enforcement and individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
